my mom took me
because she could speak to the pastor
in Chinese because her English was bad
I grew up in a Chinese church
where kids understood
what it's like to be in two cultures

because God wanted to affirm
my Chinese culture and heritage
Sometimes we can fit in so well
singing the same songs
and eating the same food
It's easy to get frustrated
running away from the strange
and glossing over the differences
I will never forget
