I found this event very helpful. WhyDoYouFearMe was an event where 3 Christians talked honestly and openly about their experiences in the Middle East and give insight to how Christians should view Islam and how we can love Muslims.

Theology =/= Missions or does it?

Did you know that theology drove missions interest in the 1800s? For people like William Carey, passion wasn't enough to sustain them in missions. Instead, they had a strong and deep understanding of sound theology. Carey knew that God was using people to accomplish his sovereign plan and sought to live a crazy and dangerous life only because his assurance was in the hands of a loving, all-knowing and ever present God.

It is unfortunate when people say that studying theology kills your passion for God's service. We can all cite many examples of people getting so puffed up with knowledge that they stop being servants but historically this argument isn't true.

A strong theology will:

  1. Help you be steadfast in the waves of this ever changing world
  2. Help you understand why God does missions
  3. Give you the words to express what the Gospel is

it will also help you argue against your critics

You love money if you tithe only 10%!?

 Luke 16

14The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. 15He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.

Wait, how can Pharisees love money if they are tithing 10% faithfully? Most people even back then probably didn't tithe as much as them. I think the key is to realize that God doesn't demand a percentage but he demands our hearts. He wants us to love giving to the church and his Kingdom work. The Law says, "Give 10 percent and you're a faithful and cheerful giver!". But, those who live by the Spirit realize maybe God is calling us to give a more meaningful amount because we can afford to give more. God doesn't commend us because we give 10% percent of our income to the church, he commends us when we show with our actions that God > buying tech/clothes/cars.

Practical tip. Giving to missions should never replace your tithe. Missions is an offering while tithing is something that God commands us to do.
