How to tell if your job is fail

by David Pat

Your job is fail if:

  1.  No one cares about what you do
  2. You're embarrassed to bring it up in conversation.
  3. Your job is boring/menial

Some important considerations before you work for any company.

  1. Do you believe in your company's product/service? Is it making the world a better place?
  2. What would happen if you weren't doing your job? Would people outside your company suffer?
  3. How much responsibility and creativity are you given at the position you're looking at.
  4. If Jesus came back tomorrow, is that the job that you want him to find you doing?

These are some of the things I thought about before pursuing my career. For me, the only job I could see myself doing was missionary work =op.

My Premarital Counseling (important for missionary couples!)

 Special struggles for missionary couples?

  1. What are you going to do for church when you are always speaking or serving on Sunday morning?
  2. What church do you pick for your "home" church?
  3. What is your spouse going to do? Serve as a missionary also or work in secular field?
  4. How are you going to raise your kids? Teach them both cultures?

As me and Carmen worked through some of issues today in counseling we realized that we have to be really honest with what we expect. I understand that family worship is really important and maybe those in ministry haven't been doing the best job of keeping their family first. I need to make sure that we have time where we worshipping, taking communion and hearing a sermon together.

Also, as a husband I need to make sure that I am doing everything I can to help build Carmen up as a missionary because she's not a spectator to my ministry but I need to help her discover in what ways she is to serve. I don't want people to know her as David's wife but make sure that people see her for who she is.

Being missionaries definitely has special challenges but it's soooo worth it.

Should you do Missions Without Going to College? Seminary?

I was inspired by Piper's answer.

Undergrad

  • It's helpful because you can bless the people with your area of expertise. Medical and Educational backgrounds for example are always helpful.
  • It can be a huge obstacle though because it might put you into a lot of student loan debt which might take you a long time to get out of. Some agencies like OMF won't let you go if you have student debt.

Seminary

  • It is essential if you are going to church plant. You need to know your theology if you want to teach and train others. It's going to save you a lot of headache later
  • Not all missionaries are church planters though. If you do medical missions for example, you might not want to continue to go to more school

I agree with Piper that in the end it's really case by case but it is very important to consider how and where you will be serving.
