Missionary Dating (What to Look For in a Guy)

What's one of the biggest obstacles keeping ladies from the mission field?. You probably guessed it. It's relationships. So here is my list of things that girls should look for in a guy if they are seriously considering missions. I'm assuming that NOT everyone knows they are called to missions right away but there are a few ways you can tell if a guy would make a good missionary.

These are the 7 dating commandments for young prospective missionaries:

  1. Thou shalt not date a non-Christian. Seriously though, he has to be a mature believer if he's going to have a chance on the mission field.
  2. Thou shalt not date a guy who spends more on his clothes than you do. Missionaries don't make a lot. Obvious right?
  3. Thou shalt not date a guy whose parents still treat him like a little kid. If his parents have to cook, clean, pay his bills or remind him to sleep, then you are in trouble.
  4. Thou shalt look for a guy who shows interest in caring for others. I don't just mean evangelism. If he cares about the homeless, elderly or kids, then there is a good chance he will like missions.
  5. Thou shalt look for a guy who lives simply. This is like #2. A simplistic lifestyle means that the guy is more ready to give up his own comforts to serve others.
  6. Thou shalt look for a guy who is passionate about the glory of God and talks as if he fellowships with Jesus. Does he tell you about what God is doing in his life?
  7. Thou shalt take the advice of older, Godly missional people. Missionaries can identify who will make it on the field. You have to trust wise counsel.

I'm not saying that every missionary guy had these qualities when they were younger but God does give us wisdom. God can change people overnight but we try to live in a way that is discerning.

I've seen what eliminates people for missionary service. I've also seen what great missionary candidates looked like when they were just starting out. Let's honor God with our dating choices.

Knives in the Hands of Pastors

Recently I was at an OMF missions conference where someone was sharing about a Chinese pastor who was talking about how short term missions changed his life.

Mr. Wang grew in western China. He had a rocky life and loved to get in knife fights. His personality was very volatile and it only got worse when his sister was put in jail. Not only was she put in jail unjustly but she wasn't even given a right to have a fair trial. Mr. Wang tried his best to fight the system but she was sentenced to hard labor for something she didn't do. Mr. Wang believed he had only one option left to him. He started making bombs in his house to exact revenge on the corrupt officials who put his sister in jail.

Then one day he was passing by a university campus where a short term missions team was practicing English with people from the community. Mr. Wang ended up having a conversation with a young college student where he heard the Gospel and was lead to Christ that day. He stopped making the bombs and tells us that story so that we will know the impact of short term missions. It didn't just save his life but also the lives of the government officials =op

When you get to Heaven you will be surprised by what God did through fishermen, farmers and college students on short term missions.
