Does Ethnicity Matter in Ministry?

James Choung, National Director of Intervarsity Asian American Ministries, has done something amazing. Incredibly, he’s taken an age old question that INHERITANCE encounters on a near-daily basis – “Does ethnicity matter in ministry?” and answered it in a simple yet remarkably clear manner within a 7 minute video.

In fact, it almost makes me want to convert this video into a small-screen necklace that I can wear around my neck – so whenever someone asks me, “So Will … why INHERITANCE? Does ethnicity even matter?”, I can just say “Listen” and click play. Wait, that’s not a bad idea. I’ll be right back.

I know. This is cool. And effective. IMO, our ethnicity always matters because it will always be part of each person’s or group’s context. One size will never fit all. But the temptation to pretend that it does–especially when it comes to preaching styles or practical theology, or even impractical theology–is always before us. Most of our tendencies is to make or buy into sweeping generalizations that end up not touching things that really matter to us.

Completely agreed PKen! The path of least resistance usually wins over the road less traveled. A difficult part is usually explaining this difference and the benefits of delving deeper into the subject – but James does a fantastic job explaining it here in such a short amount of time.  It’s definitely something I can work on myself =)

Fantastic video! As Senior Co-Pastor of a church with historical roots in the Japanese American community, I am delighted to see this.
